The goal of Lesson 5 is to impart mastery of three important biblical genres. Each of them receives its own chapter in How to Read the Bible as Literature, which is the centerpiece of this course. Here is the reading assignment in this book: chapter 6 (pages 121-129), chapter 9 (pages 159-163), and chapter 10 (pages 155-158).
Optional Learning by Doing Exercise
A good text with which to apply what you have learned in this lesson is Luke 12:13-21. This text is a parable; it is a satiric parable; and it includes two proverbs or aphoristic sayings. If you would prefer to tackle a more complex parable, choose the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32).
